As Google continues to integrate generative AI into Search, marketers and SEO professionals are closely watching how performance metrics evolve. One of the most pressing questions has been: How exactly are impressions counted when your site appears in AI Overviews or AI Mode?
John Mueller, Google Search Advocate, recently clarified this, shedding light on how the new Search Console generative AI report works.
What Counts as an Impression?
- An impression is recorded when a link to your page is shown in an AI Overview or AI Mode.
- If a link requires user activation (for example, expanding a card or clicking a dropdown), the impression is only counted after the user activates it.
- Brand icons or favicons alone do not guarantee an impression unless they are directly linked to a page.
This means that not every appearance of your brand in AI results translates into measurable impressions.
Why Your Numbers May Look Lower
Many site owners have noticed that their impression counts are lower than expected compared to the number of AI answers they appear in. The reason is simple:
- Visibility ≠ Impression. If your page is visible but requires user interaction to reveal the link, it won’t count until that action happens.
- This explains why live results may seem more frequent than what the Search Console report reflects.
What the Documentation Says
Google’s official help page defines an impression as the number of times a link to your site appears in a generative AI feature. However, it doesn’t yet clarify edge cases like:
- Combined cards
- Clustered results
- Favicon-only appearances
Mueller’s response fills this gap temporarily, until Google updates its documentation.
Why This Matters for SEO
- Accurate Reporting: Understanding the activation rule helps SEOs interpret impression data correctly.
- Strategic Visibility: It emphasizes the importance of ensuring your links are directly accessible in AI Overviews.
- Future Metrics: Currently, click data is not included in the AI report. All links share a single position, making impressions the only available metric for now.
Looking Ahead
The AI impressions report is still in limited testing, with broader rollout expected soon. Google has hinted at adding more metrics, including clicks, in future updates. For now, impressions remain the key measure of visibility in AI-driven search.
